Hi Roshan,
I don't actually see any problem for doing what you want. If you could be
more specific with your needs maybe we could help you out with a solution.
I know i had the same requirement and we even talked about developing the
console based installer but... it's a lot of work and we found out not
really worth it.
Let me explain my reason. What do you need in an installer? Console Or
GUI.... You basically need shorcuts.. user interaction... run processes
(during/after/before install). I'm surely missing some but the main idea is
that with the automation, you have a XML based script which can parse
easily.
What's the problem with having a script in which you could have user
interaction (ant, sh, batch). Through this interaction you could setup some
variable and use them to parse the XML.
In my opinion, as long as there's no bug in the automation based install,
there's basically "Nothing" you can't do with a combination of: User Defined
Script + XML Automation.
If you can think of anything that would stopyou from using this combination,
let us know and we'll try to help you out with a solution.
Cheers,
Fabrice
